UC Merced NSF I-Corps Site Application Cohort 1 2017

 

Thank you for your interest in the UC Merced NSF I-Corps Site program. With the support and mentorship of the site, the teams will learn first-hand about entrepreneurship and explore the transition of their idea, devices or other intellectual activities into the marketplace. At the conclusion of the program, applicants will have the opportunity to request $1000 - $3000 to conduct market research.

As an I-Corps attendee, you will be required to attend workshops on site at UC Merced.

Site team ideas or projects can originate from student work, research (funded or unfunded), institutional or industrial projects.

Team

Each team must have 3 participants and a maximum of one faculty advisor. For each participant in your team please list all members that will fulfill each of the three categories listed below.

Academic Lead

The Academic Lead must have an academic appointment that would normally qualify the AL to submit proposals or play the role of a PI in subsequent submissions to NSF. This person will reflect the technical strengths of scientists and engineers who participate in the program.

Business Mentor

The Business Mentor would be an experienced or emerging entrepreneur with proximity to the institution and experience in transitioning technology out of academic labs. This individual is responsible for advising the Entrepreneurial Lead on the process of customer discovery and market validation to build their capacity to fulfill the executive role. This individual has the opportunity to use their experience to help the Entrepreneurial Lead make good use of the feedback obtained from market research.

Entrepreneurial Lead

The Entrepreneurial Lead could be a postdoctoral scholar graduate student, undergraduate or other student or professional staff with relevant knowledge of the technology and a deep commitment to investigate the commercial landscape surrounding the innovation.In rare circumstances, with the approval of a cognizant NSF I-Corps Program Officer, it also could be a faculty member.The EL should also be capable and have the will to support the transition of the technology, should the project demonstrate the potential for commercial viability.
